The Right Boxing Equipment

Boxing beginners in particular are faced with the question of what they need to start boxing training. The choice of the right boxing products basically depends on what kind of boxing you want to do. Do you want to train alone with the punch bag, do you want to spar with a training partner, or do you want to participate professionally in competitions?

You need different boxing equipment for each option because, for example, boxing gloves need to be padded differently for training with opponents. This is not only about your own protection, but also that of your opponent. So-called sparring is used for training and comes close to competition, but with the difference that the aim is not to win and knock your opponent out. Thanks to different boxing agreements and rules as well as special sparring equipment, injuries during training can be prevented as far as possible. Competition boxing equipment also has to fulfil certain requirements.

Boxing Equipment for at Home – What You Need!

The boxing glove is one of the basics for boxing training at home. You also need a punch bag and a suitable attachment, e.g. a wall mount. Besides sportswear and a towel, boxing bandages are also part of the basic equipment for boxing at home.

Boxing Gloves for Adults

Boxing gloves are basically universal and can be worn by both men and women. Only children are recommended to use special models that are lighter and smaller. Besides the purpose, the size, weight, and padding play a decisive role when buying boxing gloves. We will explain below what you should look out for.

Which Boxing Gloves Are the Right Ones?

There are so many different types of boxing gloves in the boxing jungle. Punch bag gloves, sandbag gloves, equipment gloves, ball gloves, sparring gloves, competition gloves… But which ones are right for you and your boxing training? As already mentioned, the purpose of the boxing gloves is crucial. If you are primarily training alone, the focus should be on your own protection. When training with a boxing partner, the boxing gloves need to be significantly better padded in order to provide optimal protection for your opponent. Features such as a sewn-on thumb also help to reduce the risk of injury to your boxing partner. If you are ambitious and are aiming for competitions, you need to make sure that your competition gloves meet clearly defined competition requirements.

Our Skandika boxing gloves are true all-rounders and are suitable for training with punch bags, pads, and training partners. This offers you maximum flexibility to constantly vary your training sessions, which contributes to long-term motivation and more fun.

The Right Padding and Optimal Protection

What all types of boxing gloves should have in common is protective padding for optimal shock absorption. The padding of the hitting area usually consists of foam with different degrees of hardness. On the one hand, the padding serves to protect your own hands, but on the other hand it also reduces the risk of injury to your opponent during competitions or sparring. Therefore, the quality and properties of the padding are important for one's own health, but also that of your opponent. A thin padding provides a less distorted feeling of impact and less shock absorption during the punch. This is suitable for the punch bag and for your own " toughening up", but less so for a real opponent.

A stiff arm cuff is also important for optimal protection to prevent your wrists from bending during the punch.

Furthermore, boxing gloves differ in whether the thumb is sewn on or not. A sewn-on thumb is particularly interesting for beginners, as it minimises the risk of injury. In competitions, the eyes of opponents are also better protected if the thumb is sewn on. If the thumb is not sewn on, it makes it easier to put on the boxing glove without help, but also increases the risk of injury for inexperienced boxers, as the thumb can bend.

Weight and Size of Boxing Gloves

All good boxing gloves are always marked OZ. This is the unit of measurement ounces (OZ). One ounce (1 OZ) corresponds to a rounded weight of approximately 28.35 g. However, it is noticeable that the real weight differs from manufacturer to manufacturer despite the same number of ounces. Therefore, we recommend choosing the right boxing glove depending on your body weight as follows:

Own Body WeightBoxing Glove
45 - 60 kg10 oz
60 - 73 kg12 oz
73 - 90 kg14 oz
> 90 kg16 oz

Note: The higher the number of ounces, the heavier and therefore better padded the boxing glove. What a heavy boxing glove also ensures is that the training effect is more intensive. Beginners in particular will feel their muscles and tire more quickly with heavy gloves than with a light ones.

Boxing Bandages - Protection and Moisture Prevention

Boxing bandages should be worn during every boxing session and in every type of boxing glove. They are important for protecting the wrists and finger joints, tendons and ligaments. But they also serve a second purpose. The bandages allow less moisture to penetrate the glove, which contributes to the longer life of the boxing glove. In addition to the bandages, openings and ventilation holes also prevent sweaty hands.

It makes sense to bandage your hands when trying on the glove in order to be able to choose the right size of boxing glove and ensure that it fits properly under real training conditions. If you have small hands, you can use thicker bandages to ensure the right fit. Note that a new boxing glove will usually feel a little tight at first. Just like a sports shoe needs to be broken in, a boxing glove needs to be "boxed in"!

The Best Punch Bag for Home Use

If you want to box without a real training partner and practise technique and punches, a punch bag is the best choice. Alternatives to the punch bag are various shapes of punching balls and boxing dummies for boxing training at home.

Besides the standing punch bag, the hanging punch bag is one of the absolute classics. It is a true all-rounder among martial arts training equipment. Sandbags are available in different sizes, shapes, and materials. Training with a hanging punch bag enables a realistic and even more demanding boxing workout, in which accuracy can be optimally trained.

In this version, the punch bag is attached by means of ceiling and wall brackets and is free-swinging. The bag should be attached using a sturdy steel chain with a swivel joint. The swivel joint ensures that the resulting forces are optimally distributed. Please note that the ceiling or wall must be very stable as the training bag is attached by drilling holes.

If you take a closer look at this traditional training bag, three criteria play a decisive role when buying a punch bag: the size, the weight, and the material.

The Right Punch Bag Size

The size of the punch bag depends primarily on whether you primarily train punching techniques with the upper body or also integrate kicks into your training. A short punch bag is suitable for training with the upper body only. If your boxing training includes kicks, a longer punch bag is recommended.

At the same time, the right punch bag size also depends on the weight of the trainee. With a weight of 100 kg, a punch bag can be made to move much more than with a weight of 60 kg, despite the lack of technique. The available space is also decisive. If you have little space, a smaller punch bag is best. However, if you plan to train e.g. avoidance movements, you should make sure that there is enough space around the punch bag, as it can swing significantly. Avoidance movements are dodges from a standing position in front of the punch bag or a real opponent.

The Optimal Punch Bag Weight

The weight affects the resistance. The heavier the punch bag, the greater the resistance and the effort required. At the same time, the weight of the punch bag affects the pendulum behaviour, to what extent it moves due to the punch. The punch bag should neither not move at all nor move too much.

The optimal weight of the punch bag can be determined by your own body weight. Beginners should start with about 1/3 of their own body weight. As training progresses, the punch bag should not exceed 75% of the body weight. If you train primarily with kicks, you should choose a heavier weight than when practising pure punching techniques.

The Ideal Punch Bag Material

When it comes to the material, a distinction is made between the outer material and the filling. Typical outer materials are leather and imitation leather. Canvas fabric is also used occasionally, but the other materials are more resistant.

Leather is very robust and durable. At the same time, however, leather is demanding in terms of care and more expensive to buy. Synthetic leather, on the other hand, is cheaper which is why synthetic leather punch bags are especially interesting for beginners who do not want to spend a fortune straight away. Although they are less robust than leather, these punch bags can still withstand considerable wear and tear and only a few people aspire to a professional career with daily, intensive boxing training. At the same time, they are much easier to care for and can be easily wiped clean.

In addition to the outer material, the seams are also important. Sturdy seams and good workmanship contribute significantly to durability. As few seams as possible is an advantage, as this minimises the potential for tearing. At the same time, the risk of injury decreases with few seams, which should be considered when using your elbow in the martial art Muay Thai, for example.

The filling of the punch bag has a significant influence on the feeling of the punch, as materials feel and behave differently. The inner material determines how hard the punch bag is and how well it can retain its shape. The most popular filling materials include fabric and leather scraps, plastic granules, cork, dry rice or pulses. Even though punch bags are often called sand bags, sand should never be used as a filling material. This would make the punch bag much too hard, putting too much strain on bones and joints. Sand can, however, be used as an additional weight in a separate bag in the bottom of the punch bag to increase the overall weight.

Punch bags that are already filled are an advantage, especially for beginners, as no mistakes can be made when filling them. Moreover, there is no need to invest time and effort in filling. The filling usually consists of fabric scraps that give way when punched, which is why boxing training with these punch bags tends to be easier on your joints than with other filling materials. In addition, the idea of sustainability plays a role, since the fabric remnants from production are simply used and no materials are wasted.
