Camping in autumn: Top 3 sun destinations in Europe
From Portugal to Spain to Croatia - here you can enjoy the sun
Experience a few more warm days in autumn before this summer slowly comes to an end. Wondering where you can camp in autumn** and still enjoy the sunshine? It's important to check which campsites are open. We show you the most beautiful camping regions in Europe in autumn.
In the south of Portugal lies the Algarve - a popular destination for many holidaymakers all year round. No wonder: the south coast of Portugal boasts breathtaking beaches, cliffs and views**. And the best thing is that when it starts to get cooler at home, it's still nice and warm in the Algarve. Even in autumn, the temperatures here are still *pleasant*. And as this attracts many travellers, the campsites are often open all year round. So nothing stands in the way of a camping holiday in autumn.
If you are travelling to the Algarve, you should have seen the sunrise and sunset at least once. These magical moments will stay with you forever. The Praia do Camilo is a wonderful place for the sunrise. The path winds down wooden steps to the beach, where the sun slowly rises between the rocks in the water. The best place to watch the sunset is at the Farol do Cabo de São Vicente. The lighthouse is considered the south-westernmost point of the Portuguese mainland and attracts many travellers at sunset. So it's best to get there a little earlier.
The old town of Lagos is particularly worth seeing. Situated directly by the sea, Lagos delights visitors with its narrow streets and old city walls.
Absolute tip: Be sure to visit the Praia da Bordeira. This extensive sandy beach attracts many surfers and the path over the wooden walkways to the sea is simply marvellous.
Camping site recommendation: We recommend the Salema eco camp very close to the beautiful Praia da Salema beach. This campsite is open all year round and offers pitches for motorhomes and tents as well as other accommodation options, including studios and flats.
Particularly great: This campsite uses solar energy for hot water, plastic waste is largely avoided and the in-house restaurant uses most ingredients from local producers.
Portugal's direct neighbour, the region of Andalusia, is waiting to be discovered by you. September and October in particular are considered the perfect holiday destination for this time of year due to the slightly milder temperatures. Camping in autumn is therefore a great way to explore this region of Spain.
The Costa del Sol (Sun Coast) in particular attracts many holidaymakers with beautiful stretches of beach along around 300 kilometres of coastline. From the southernmost tip of the Spanish mainland - Tarifa - to the Portuguese border, Andalusia shines with the Costa de la Luz. One of the most beautiful beaches on this coast is definitely the Cala de Roche. With its steep cliffs and rocks and yet fine sandy beach, this bay attracts many holidaymakers.
The capital of the region is Sevilla. The historical sights here include the Alcázar Royal Palace and the Plaza de España, which is surrounded by a building and a canal.
But Granada is also one of the places worth seeing in this region. Granada delights travellers with its medieval architecture directly on the Sierra Nevada.
Andalusia not only attracts travellers with its impressive stretches of beach and historic towns. There is also something for everyone in the interior of the country. The Sierra Nevada National Park, for example, boasts an impressive mountain landscape that is perfect for hiking.
Camping site recommendation: The Camping Torre de la Peña campsite is located near Tarifa and is therefore an ideal starting point for discovering Andalusia. Here you can choose between different pitches. The campsite is open all year round and offers you, among other things, a pool with a view of the sea.
A highlight: Some pitches are located directly on the beach with breathtaking views of the sea. But the pitches a little further up also offer fantastic views.
Croatia impresses with its varied landscape and beautiful old towns. October is the perfect time of year to discover them. It is still relatively warm, but not too warm to go on a discovery tour. And Croatia in particular is one of the absolute top destinations for camping holidays among camping fans - whether by the sea or in the middle of nature.
Northern Dalmatia is a perfect starting point to visit many sights in the vicinity and one or two national parks. Among the top sights and places that are not too crowded in autumn are the National Park Krka and the National Park Plitvice Lakes. In both national parks you can go on beautiful hikes and enjoy nature to the full. The impressive waterfalls, rivers and the many lakes with their crystal-clear water in Plitvice Lakes National Park are particularly impressive. The Krka National Park also shines with its many waterfalls and magnificent landscape.
The small town of Šibenik is located on the coast right next to the national park. Stroll through the old town with its many fortresses** and the Cathedral of St James. Or take a boat trip to the Kornati National Park with its beautiful sandy beaches.
It is also worth taking a trip to Zadar and its impressive old town with the Church of St Donatus, which is located on a peninsula and offers a beautiful view of the sea. The "Sea Organ" is particularly worth seeing. The sea plays the music here - the waves create a melody on the stairs. The mix of modernity and artefacts from the past make Zadar an impressive city.
Camping site recommendation: Located right in the centre of the top attractions is the campsite Mićanovi Dvori Camping Village Zrmanja, which is open all year round and from which you only need about an hour by car to the national parks. So nothing stands in the way of camping in autumn!
The campsite in unspoilt nature scores points with its own pool and many outdoor activities such as horse riding and rafting.
Even if it is still warm at these holiday destinations in autumn during the day, it cools down in the evening and especially at night. The right sleeping mat and sleeping bag are therefore essential.
Our inflatable sleeping mats - such as the 3D Premium sleeping mat - provide excellent protection against the cold ground and ensure a comfortable night's sleep. To make autumn camping even more comfortable, we recommend our Vegas sleeping bag, which will keep you warm in temperatures around 10° Celsius.
With our tips, camping in the autumn holidays will be a real highlight - whether in Portugal, Spain or Croatia. Our equipment will keep you nice and warm and the right itinerary is also taken care of!
