- Reading time 999 minutes

Cooking on the campsite is simply part of a proper camping holiday. Preparing food in the open air is really something special. But what equipment do you need for your cooking sessions? We'll show you the different cooking methods and list the equipment you shouldn't forget for cooking while camping.

The most important equipment

Various utensils** are suitable for preparing your dishes. We have compiled an overview of the most common preparation methods for you here.

- Spirit or gas cooker

  • Barbecue (gas, electric or charcoal barbecue)
  • Dutch Oven](https://shop.skandika.com/outdoor/kochzubehoer/dutch-oven) with briquettes and chimney starter
  • Mobile induction hob
  • French press

One-pot dishes** are particularly suitable for preparation on the campsite, as you often only have limited space available. Otherwise, you have the option of taking a camping cooker with two hobs with you. Alternatively, the Dutch Oven is ideal for preparing more unusual dishes. The lid can be used as an additional pot or pan. You can cook, braise, grill and even bake with a cast iron pot! Our Dutch Oven Set would be a suitable choice if you don't just want to concentrate on basic recipes. Here you also have a sauce pan, a frying pan and a grill plate. The set is also equipped with barbecue tongs and a spatula. The French press is a must for coffee in the morning.

Don't forget to take a cool box or freezer box with you. This will keep your drinks cold and give you the option of storing perishable food. You can choose between electric cool boxes or ones with ice packs.

Cooking utensils

Think about what you want to cook in advance and then choose the right cooking utensils for the campsite. This way you don't run the risk of taking too much with you. This saves weight. The essentials include the following equipment.

  • Pot & pan
  • Knife
  • Chopping board
  • Cooking spoon
  • spatula
  • Barbecue tongs

Crockery & cutlery

Remember to take enough crockery for the appropriate number of people with you. It is sufficient to pack everything once per person so that your luggage does not become too bulky.

  • Plates
  • Mugs (serve as glasses and also as cups)
  • cutlery
  • Bowl
  • Storage boxes, lunch boxes

You can save a lot of weight with crockery and cutlery for camping. Go for stainless steel or plastic. These lightweight materials make transport easier and are also suitable for trekking tours or short trips where you don't need to take too much with you.

Food: Essentials

A basic supply of common and frequently used foods is the be-all and end-all of outdoor cooking. Depending on where you are travelling to, you should choose different local foods and base your camping kitchen on them. Here is a small selection of the most important ingredients:

  • Spices such as salt, pepper, garlic, curry
  • oil
  • pasta
  • Rice, couscous, lentils
  • Potatoes

Order & cleanliness

Just like at home, cooking at the campsite involves washing up afterwards. You'll need a few utensils to make sure this goes smoothly. Here are the basics for washing up at the campsite:

  • Tea towel
  • dishcloth
  • Kitchen paper
  • Bin bag + rubbish bin
  • Washing-up liquid

Choose environmentally friendly variants of washing-up liquid and use dishcloths and dishcloths that are reusable.

As you can see, you can save on equipment if you limit yourself to the essential utensils for cooking while camping and weigh up what you really need. Think in advance about what you would like to cook and see what you can't do without in your camping kitchen!
