Your apples are slowly ripening in the garden - how about a warm apple pie in the Dutch oven? Enjoy it with a delicious coffee. Whether at home or outside with a warm blanket - apple pie from the cast iron pot tastes good anywhere.
Preparation with briquettes
Depending on the size, burn approx. 12-16 briquettes and place 2/3 of them on the lid and 1/3 under the Dutch Oven.
Preparation in the oven
To prepare in the oven, preheat the oven to 220°C top/bottom heat.
Preparation
1
First line your Dutch oven with baking paper so that you can easily remove the apple pie from the tin after baking.
2
Peel the apples and cut them into small pieces. Add some brown sugar and cinnamon to the apple pieces and mix everything well. Put the apples to one side.
3
Beat the eggs and add the softened butter, sugar and vanilla sugar. The best way to prepare the batter is with a food processor. However, it works just as well with a whisk at the campsite, it just takes a little longer.
4
Now fold in the flour and baking powder until a dough forms. Use your hands at the campsite or prepare the dough in advance at home.
5
Divide the dough into approximately three equal portions. Line the base of the Dutch oven with the first portion and the rim with the second.
6
Place the apple pieces on the base and use the last third of the batter to cover your Dutch oven cake with crumble.
7
If you are preparing the cake with briquettes, put the lid on and spread 2/3 of the briquettes on the lid and place the rest under the Dutch oven.
8
Leave the apple pie to bake in the cast iron pan for around an hour before serving lukewarm. The baking time in the oven is around 50 minutes and you leave the lid off.
Serve the Dutch oven apple pie with optional vanilla ice cream, cream or vanilla sauce. An insider tip: try topping it with maple syrup - a very tasty combination. You can also add chopped walnuts or sultanas to the apple pieces to flavour the cake.
